Beauty

As teenagers and people in general, we tend to deride and hector ourselves because of things that we perceive as flaws. Under this duress, people make themselves believe that they’re ugly, stupid, fat, unable to please the implacable voice that wants betterment. A common complaint is the lack of ethereal beauty, which isn’t hard to understand considering the waif-like models and perfect actresses gracing every glossy magazine page and screen. However, I found something interesting when I looked up the definition of beauty.

Although the first meaning was that beauty is something alluring and aesthetically pleasing, the second was “a combination of qualities that pleases the intellect or moral sense.” I thought this was intriguing considering that when most people complain about not being beautiful, they’re saying that they’re not pretty, not that they lack “a combination of qualities that pleases the intellect or moral sense.” People are so concerned about being visually pleasing that they forget that beauty isn’t just a value derived from skin tone, size, and eye color. It’s one of the most cliche thing to say, but beauty is not what society has lead us to believe - jutting bones and perfection. Personally, I think everyone has beauty because we’re made of strung-together atoms and stardust and everything is connected somehow. I find that a combination of qualities that please my intellect and moral sense.
